Larry legend Malcolm Wilson has been nominated by FIA President Mohamed Ben Slayem as the next vice president of sports.
Ben Slayem will need to nominate Robert Reid’s replacement after the former vice president of sports resigned earlier this month, citing the “governance crisis” at the FIA. Reid – a former co-driver who won the World Rally Championship (WRC) – was a long-term alliance with Bensleyem being located since 2021, but was very critical of the direction the governing body was working on his departure.
“My resignation is not about personality, it’s about principles,” Reed said. “Motorsports deserves accountable, transparent and member-led leadership. We cannot continue to be part of a system that does not reflect these values in good faith.”
Ben Sulayem now has appointed Wilson to take over the position, retaining a strong gathering link as Briton has driven at WRC for nearly 20 years and established M-sport operations to handle Ford’s WRC program. Wilson was awarded an OBE for service to motorsports in 2009.
“I am pleased to have named Malcolm Wilson OBE in the role of Vice President of the FIA, Sports President,” Ben Slayem said. “Malcolm has a prominent career in global motorsports. For over 40 years, he has competed at the highest level as both a team’s driver and technology partner. This experience is invaluable to the FIA and the member clubs, growing professional motorsports, promoting sport innovation, and benefits fans, drivers and teams.”
FIA members will vote for the appointment of 69-year-old Wilson at an extraordinary general meeting and meeting to be held in Macau in June.
“It’s a great honor to be nominated for the role of FIA Vice President of Sports as a driver and as a team technical partner in the 1970s,” Wilson said. “FIA has been a central role in my career and I am extremely excited to support the President and the FIA family in its important mission. I have not had any more exciting time to participate in motorsports.
“We look forward to working with the president during his current term, bringing our sport to new audiences and providing the best championships to all our competitors.”
