Alexander Volkov is capitalized as John Jones is no longer in the photo in the title.
After taking the heavyweight division hostage for two years, “Bone” left the sport in June. As a result, Tom Aspinall was promoted from interim title holder to indisputable champion, and later vowed to be something Weight Class hadn’t seen in a long time.
However, if Volkov went his way, Aspinall’s reign at the top would be short.
“I didn’t really understand what was going on in the heavyweight division. John Jones has retired and something has moved, so it’s time to come back and have a good fight and maybe fight for the belt,” Volkov told MMA Junkie.
Alexander Volkov remains unhappy with the loss of a rough division decision on his final outing
In December, Volkov appeared on the other side of a controversial split decision against Ciryl Gane. Previously, “Drago” had a five-game winning streak, including a trio finish against Jaiadinho Rozensstrick, Alexander Romanov and Tai Twivasa.
“It’s fine now,” Volkov said of the loss to Gain. “Emotionally, I had bad feelings from the fight. I trained a lot. It was a really difficult camp for me. I got hurt. I had some of my problems. I was a rematch for me. It was a rematch for me. It was a job, a good fight with him.
“Of course, it’s (true) that we actually won,” Volkov continued. “But I won. I’ve gotten better in this fight. Certainly, this fight gave me the opportunity to grow after this loss. But now I’ve begun thinking about myself differently.
