Ian Machado Garry believes Jack Della Maddalena deserves more credit for closing the attack on Belal Muhammad at UFC 315.
“JDM” won the biggest victory of his career in Montreal, beating Muhammad to win the welterweight world title through a rather dominant unanimous decision victory. Following the fight, fans praised Muhammad for choosing to stand and trade with Della Madalena, creating a rather exciting scrap.
Of course, some believe that abandoning his grapple-heavy game plan was a culmination of disasters because he “remembers his name.”
Garry quickly disputed these claims, believing that “JDM” was credit worthy for suppressing Muhammad’s attacks and forcing him to play the Australian game. But Garry didn’t stop there. “The Future” also warned Muhammad for trying to outbox the boxer and trying to get his ego to make the most of him.
“There were a lot of stories after that. ‘Yeah, Beral didn’t shoot enough,” Garry said, appearing on Ariel Helwanishaw. “Jack needs to control footwork, head movement, distance and make it troublesome for the Beral to come in. But at some point you have to realize that you need to do something different. You need to change that.
“As a champion, you can’t change it, mix it, push and drive it, and accept being in the opponent’s world. You need to make it happen.”
We know Della Madarena’s next move, but it’s not so clear to Beral Muhammad
After Jacques Della Madalena, he will be in a clash with Islamic Makachev. He recently vacated his lightweight title to challenge the newly-built welterweight title holder.
As for Beral Muhammad, there could be a rematch with second-ranked contender Sean Brady or a much-anticipated scrap with undefeated Shavkat Rakmonov. Perhaps the trilogy with Leon Edwards will be fighting. There are plenty of options, and any of them bring Muhammad back to the photo in the title.
