NEW YORK – Olympic gold medalist Zheng Qinwen withdraws from the US on Monday two days after he announced that he had undergone arthroscopic surgery on his right elbow due to “continuous pain.”
Zheng, who was sixth in the first round last month was defeated at Wimbledon.
“We have been dealing with persistent pain in our right elbow during training and games over the past few months,” the 22-year-old, right-handed from China, told social media on Saturday. “Even though we tried various treatments to manage it, the discomfort never completely disappeared.”
The exit from the last Grand Slam tournament of the year was no surprise as Zheng expects it will take months to recover. The US Open will begin on August 24th.
She was replaced by French Leoria Jeanjean on the field.
