TORONTO – 2022 National Bank Open Champion Pablo Caleno Basta opened the tournament on Monday, beating Canada’s wildcard entries Liam Drax 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.

When the tournament took place in Montreal three years ago, Carreno Busta won his first Masters 1,000 title.

Another Spaniard, Jaume Munar, advanced in a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Canadian Dan Martin, who came through the qualifiers to ensure the appearance of the main draw of his first ATP Tour.
