The New York Knicks are expected to stay busy in the offseason and try to find a new head coach who can lead them to the NBA championship.

Until recently, Tom Thibodeau was the team’s head coach, but was fired following the Knicks’ humiliating Eastern Conference Finals defeat.

Obviously, many names have been proposed as the team’s next head coach. That includes current Dallas Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd.

But former NBA veteran Cedric Maxwell recently made the claim to get a chance in New York by one of the Boston Celtics assistant coaches.

In an episode of the Night Cap Podcast, Maxwell revealed that he recently got in touch with Celtics assistant coach Sam Kassel.

He believes the former NBA All-Star should replace Thibodeau and be the candidate to become the Knicks’ next head coach.

“I spoke with Sam Kassel, assistant Celtics coach and I hope he gets that kind of job,” Maxwell revealed.

However, Maxwell quickly presented the reason for the “marquee” that Cassel likely won’t make a cut.

“But in that particular marketplace, they’re currently looking for a Marquee name. Sam’s name wasn’t Marquee’s name because he wasn’t previously the head coach,” Maxwell continued.

He concluded by adding:

It is true that Cassell has no experience as a head coach, but he has been an assistant coach for years.

In fact, he landed his first gig in 2009. That being said, let’s take a quick look at Cassell’s NBA coaching experience.

Team nameLong-standing coaching
Washington Wizard2009-10 to 2013-14 (5th year)
Los Angeles Clippers2014-15 to 2019-20 (6th year)
Philadelphia 76ers2020-21~2022-23 (3rd year)
Boston CelticsFrom 2023-24 to current (2 years)

Overall, Cassell has 16 years of experience as an assistant coach in the NBA. Combined with the fact that he had a solid 15-year NBA career as a player, he won three most notable NBA titles.

The Knicks were able to do that risk very well together with him as the next head coach. After all, even the Phoenix Suns gave Jordan Ott a chance, also the rookie head coach.
