According to the latest report, Suryakumaryadav’s spot as India’s T20I captain is threatened by the appearance of Shubmangir, and he could be fired earlier than later.

The Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee and Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir want to groom Shubman Gill as the next T20I captain, and his inclusion into India’s Asian Cup 2025 team as vice captain was the beginning of the process.

Shubman Gill makes a T20I comeback and plays a leadership role

Gill has experienced a golden run in his cricket career and is being groomed to become the next poster boy in Indian cricket after the retirement of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.

He showed off his talent to the world at a very young age, and at age 25, Gill appears to be fully matured to advance Indian cricket. In his first stint as test captain, Gill helped India pull out a series 2-2 in the UK, scoring 754 runs on an average of 75.40.

Now he is the vice captain of ODIS and T20IS, and once he took over as captain from Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav, he was aiming to bring India to new heights.

Overall, Gill played 37 Tests in India, averaging 2647 runs with an average of 41.35. In a 55 ODI game, he averaged 2775 runs on average 59.04, and in the 21 T20I game he averaged 30.42 and 578 runs on strike rates.

Shubman Gill wasn’t the first choice, but is set to be groomed as the next Indian T20I skipper

According to an Indian Express report, BCCI Selector and Gautam Gunville are hoping to groom Shubman Gill as the next T20I captain as Suryakumar Yadav turns 35 next month.

The discussion on this issue took place at the Asia Cup Squad Selection Conference, where Gill “consumed most of the time” before being identified as the “most eligible candidate.”

“It was a matter that spent most of the time at Tuesday’s selection meeting, and Coach Gautam Gambir, who participated online, also had the view that India needs to care for someone for their future and that Gill, who will be 26 next month, is the most eligible candidate,” the report read.

According to the same report, all-rounder Axar Patel, India’s vice captain in the England T20I series, was considered a possible captain option, with Gill not his first choice.

However, the selectors needed someone who could serve Indian cricket for a long time, so they ended up zeroing Shubman Gill and no candidate was better than Gill.

Shubman Gill is breathing Suryakumar Yadav’s neck now

Another report from PTI claimed that BCCI had sent a clear message to Suryakumar Yadav with his appointment as Gill’s vice captain.

Former world No. 1 batter Suryakumar Yadav last recorded a T20I 50 against Bangladesh in October 2024, and since then his numbers in T20I cricket have been very poor. However, he saw it in an astonishing way at IPL 2025 and scored 717 runs.

At the press conference, Suryakumar Yadav and Ajit Agarkar were asked about Gill being considered the captain of all foreseeable future formats.

“Ye Sawal aap ke liye hai (this question is for you),” Suryakumar answered with a light note, asking Agarkar to answer.

“I can now discuss T20 cricket with you, and he (Gil) is already leading,” Agarkar said. “As Surya mentioned (previously), he was the vice captain when he played T20 cricket in India. Clearly he saw some leadership qualities and his shape in the UK was what we wanted,” the former Indian Pacer added.
