Ebelesi Eze has spoken about one of the biggest transfer decisions of his career, revealing that a move to Tottenham was on the table even before Arsenal’s interest changed completely.
In an exclusive interview with The Athletic, the English midfielder admitted there is only one outcome once the Gunners begin their approach.
The former Crystal Palace star says the appeal of Arsenal is more than just football.
The England international has been a regular starter for the Gunners this season, not only maintaining his good form in this season’s Champions League, but also contributing to them advancing to the top of the Premier League.
Ebelesi Eze close to joining Tottenham
Eze came close to joining Spurs this summer, but changed his mind after Arsenal tried to sign him at the last minute.
Eze told The Athletic that he made the decision immediately after hearing about Arsenal’s late intervention.
“I was ready to go to Tottenham…but from the moment Arsenal came, it was always them.” As reported by Fabrizio Romano, Eze explained:
The midfielder went on to explain what makes Arsenal such an attractive place under Mikel Arteta.
He likened playing for the North London giants to performing on a big stage, with high stakes, high expectations and unrelenting pressure.
“Playing for Arsenal is like a show, a theater.” he said. “There’s more pressure to play for the title, but it’s something I’ve dreamed of.”
Eze has a point to prove at Arsenal
This dream speaks volumes about Arsenal’s transformation under Arteta. The Gunners regained their identity as a club associated with attacking football, defensive discipline and the belief that they could once again compete for major honours.
His motivation for joining the Gunners was also to prove a point. He had been in Arsenal’s youth ranks since he was a child, but the north London club allowed him to leave, leaving Eze in tears.
Now is the time for him to prove himself at the club and strive towards his childhood dream of winning a silver medal with the club of his heart.
