If the New York Knicks’ next head coach, Jason Kidd, is dead, Brian Windhorst has a path for them to get him.
Things are likely to change at Madison Square Garden. After Tom Thibodeau has opened up his head coaching position, there is a lot of talk about his replacement.
Since the search began, Jason Kidd’s name has been linked almost constantly to the Knicks. The current Dallas Mavericks head coach appears to be an internal favourite for taking the reins.
What’s interesting about this whole situation is that the Mavericks have not ruled out Kid, who could potentially leave his current role.
But if MAVS intervenes and Jason Kid doesn’t allow him to leave his position completely, can the Knicks get their man? Brian Windhorst believes he can refer to a similar situation from Kidd’s coaching career.
Speaking at the sports center, Brian Windhorst outlined the various options the Dallas Mavericks have to deal with the New York Knicks’ interest in Jason Kidd.
He mentioned how the Mavericks can keep Kidd, but Windhorst reminded everyone that the Mavericks can trade Kid for the Knicks.
This precedent comes from Kidd’s own career when the Brooklyn Nets traded head coach Kid for the Milwaukee Bucks in exchange for two two-round picks.
“So essentially, when the Knicks are interested, the ball is in the Mavericks court and as I see there are three options.
“One of which is, “No, thank you so much. See you in the fall, Jason. I look forward to the season. I look forward to the Cooper Flag.”
“They can probably try and get Jason Kidd to have zero interest in the Knicks on a new deal. They gave him an extension last year.
“Or they could negotiate the trade and we’ve seen trades of several coaches over the past 15-18 years, including Jason Kidd.
“He was swapped out of the Brooklyn net for the Milwaukee Bucks 11 years ago, so that doesn’t mean Jason Kidd has never been in this situation.”
If the New York Knicks bring a decent offer to seduce Jason Kidd, the Dallas Mavericks may agree to trade.
But that’s still far from guaranteed. First, the New York Knicks have few tradable assets when it comes to choices when it emptying the vault in the Karl Anthony Towns and Mikal Bridges deal.
Second, the Mavericks aren’t going to let Jason Kidd leave if they don’t have the right alternative in mind.
The next season will be a crucial season for the Mavericks. Because they need a coach who can draft Cooper Flags and develop young stars properly.
However, if these two factors are successful, all parties can leave in satisfaction with this transaction. Coaching transactions are rare in the NBA, with Jason Kid and Dock Rivers being the last two notable examples.
Being a Knicks head coach is appealing. Even the best kid of all time for the net, the chance to coach their rival team, one of the most historic teams in the NBA, may be too big to pass on.
