Former champion and number two seed Carlos Alcaraz lost his opening round match at the Miami Open Friday night.
Alcaraz, who had a goodbye in the first round, was upset by Belgian David Goffin in 5-7, 6-4 and 6-3 in the second round.
Goffin took a break in each of the three sets to lead, securing the victory at the second match point in which sliding Alkaraz failed to retrieve Forehand Goffin back into the corner.
The loss comes after Alcaraz’s stunning semi-final exit at Indian Wells. There, the ATP Masters 1000 event in the California Desert, where champion Jack Draper ended Alcaraz’s 16-game winning streak.
Goff will then face America’s Brandon Nakashima, who defeated Roberto Carvaros Baena 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.
