Virgil Van Dijk has signed a new contract with Liverpool to keep him at the club for more than 25 years from 2024.
The current contract for Liverpool captain is expected to expire at the end of the season, and like Mohamed Sarah, who signed a new deal last week, he put the pen on paper on a two-year deal.
Van Dijk joined Liverpool from Southampton in January 2018 on a then-recorded fee for defender (£75 million) and has since made 314 appearances in all competitions.
Since taking on Liverpool’s debut in January 2018, Vandick has created the second clearance for Premier League defender (997), tracking only James Tarkowski (1,435).
Only Tarkowski (1,811) had won more duels among top-flight defenders at that time than Van Dyke (1,227), with the centre-back taking part in clean sheets from 97 leagues.
Van Dijk scored 27 goals for Liverpool in all competitions. This is more targets than any other Premier League defenders have scored in all competitions at the same time (Matt Doherty is second at 23).
“I’m so happy, I’m very proud,” Van Dik told the club’s website. “Obviously, there are a lot of emotions that are going through my head right now, talking about it.

“It’s a feeling of pride. It’s a feeling of joy. It’s incredible. The journey so far in my career has been amazing and I’m very happy to be able to expand it for two more years at this club.
“It was always Liverpool, that was the case, it was always in my mind, it was always a plan, it was always Liverpool.
“In my mind, there was no doubt that this was a place for me and my family. I’m one of Liverpool. Someone was called an adopter the other day. I’m really proud to hear these things.
Van Dijk won the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, two EFL Cups, the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup.
He is also on the verge of captaining Liverpool and reaching the second Premier League trophy.
