London – Jordan Vassenick’s mentality has made a huge difference.
Former Cage Warriors champion Usenic (13-3 MMA, 0-1 UFC) will return to the Octagon this Saturday against Chris Duncan on the main card for UFC Fight Night 255 (ESPN+) at O2 in London. This was his second fight in the promotion, and he now feels on par with other fellow UFC fighters.
“I think we put the UFC fighter plane on the pedestal,” Vucenic said Thursday at UFC Fight Night 255 Media Day. “I saw them here and realized that they weren’t here, they weren’t here, I was just with them.
Despite his lack of proper thinking about his UFC debut, Vucenic actually worked very well. He didn’t win, but he got closer to cleaning up veteran veteran Gram Kutaterage. He dropped him in the first round and appeared to dominate the fight. Eventually things changed and Vucenic lost his decision.
“The crazy thing about the battle of Gram is that everyone knows how good he is,” Vassenick said. “I thought I was going to win the wrestling and grappling battle. It was an eight-day game plan where we had to prepare for it. I actually thought he was playing Possum in stand-up.
“I watched him for years and he was hitting everyone, so in my head I was like, ‘He’s playing possum. He’s confident in me’, but I hit him with a shot and dropped him.
Fighting Duncan (12-2 MMA, 3-1 UFC), Vucenic feels confident in what he brings to the table. Also, I feel that Vucenic can freely pursue a finish without having to fight in a short period of time.
“If you hurt him like you hurt the first glam, then ‘Oh, I need to keep myself fresh. I need to save some in the tank for the round,” Vucenic said. “I can chase him this time, so yeah, I’m ready for 100% three rounds.”
