Manchester United legend Roy Keene crashed into Harry Maguire in his role in the goal of Tottenham’s victory in the Europa League final last night.
The Red Devils were ultimately beaten 1-0 by the Spurs as Brennan Johnson scored a sloppy winner in the first half of the match at Bilbao.
Keene was clearly not satisfied with much of what happened behind the scenes due to Man UTD at that moment.
Critics also questioned whether Luke Shaw was a perfect fit, but he saved most of his criticism of Maguire, who was accused of not being able to multitask at that critical moment.
Roy Keene criticizes Harry Maguire for Spurs’ victory goal vs. Man UTD
Discussing the goal, Keene told CBS Sports, as Metro quoted:
“I think Maguire has to focus on clearing the ball. Johnson is clearly a great and offensive run. United have enough bodies, but they don’t.
“The Spurs aren’t doing anything unusual. It’s all a very easy play. That’s where you have to be really critical of United’s defensive form and decision-making.
“We discussed it before the game when it got wider and the ball came in… the players aren’t doing their job, they’re not focused.
“Remember, there’s only one ball. Focus on the ball from time to time.
“We ask defenders, people talk about what midfielders do their job… you have to multitask.
“It’s like, ‘I have my guy here!”, but no, you have to multitask, you have to do multiple jobs.
“It’s too easy. For United, it’s too easy all season.”
What’s next for Manchester United?
It’s not hiding for United now and there’s nothing to invite the season to sugar. The 2024/25 campaign was an absolute disaster for clubs of their size.
Reuben Amorim’s men remained 16th in the Premier League table, and if everyone hadn’t been left straight back, this could have been a club relegation match, without the disastrous quality of the newly promoted aspect.
Players like Maguire have been staying at Old Trafford for a long time without making enough contributions, and there is no doubt that this summer has been a massive round-up of players.
