McLaren has officially announced that he will return to the top flight of the 2027 World Endurance Championship and return to the battle for a complete victory at Le Mans in 24 hours.
The Zack Brown-led outfit has returned to the top level of sports car racing since last year’s 24-hour roulin.
During the Qatar round, Brown said it was a “priority” for McLaren to return to Le Mans and compete for full honor.
He won the Le Mans in 1995 and completed the Motorsport Triple Crown of Victories with Le Mans, Indianapolis 500 and Monaco Grand Prix.
In a press release and teaser video released Thursday morning, McLaren confirmed he will be joining WEC in the hypercar class in 2027.
The team did not reveal any other details except for the date of the WEC entry and a simple line from Brown. “We’re back.”
The full announcement of that plan is expected to take place in Le Mans this June, on the 30th anniversary of the victory at the Enduro with the F1 GTR.
At this stage, it is not clear which car McLaren will enter the WEC in 2027, but Brown previously spoke about going down the LMDH route rather than LMH’s competitor.
It is also not certain if McLaren will also be taking part in the IMSA Sports Car Championship in North America when he returns to racing top flight sports cars.
With entry into WEC in 2027, McLaren has been granted three years with current regulations after organisers announced last year that the rules would remain the same until 2029.
When McLaren joins WEC Field in 2027, the number of top manufacturers will reach 11, and Ford will return in 2027, and Genesis (Hyundai entry) will debut next year.
McLaren currently exists in the LMGT3 class WEC, with United Autosport designed in brown.
#59 McLaren was second in the recent Qatar round of 2025 WEC.
