British Jacob Fianley entered the second round of the Miami Open with a 7-6 (8), 2-6, 6-4 victory over France’s Benjamin Bonge on Thursday.
It was the 23-year-old first ATP Masters victory and he had to push himself to his physical limits to win it. He suffered from a leg injury in the second set, and got a medical timeout before the third set and received treatment for his left hip.
However, he came together to win a second round showdown with world number two Alexander Zverev. The two recently met at the Australian Open, with the Germans winning straight sets.
“It was very difficult. I felt my left foot twitch a bit when I moved into the forehand,” Fearnley told Sky Sports about his victory.
“I had to dig deeper, but I got a break on the third start because it could have easily escaped me.
Meanwhile, Cameron Norry saw the exit for the first round in Miami after a 6-4, 6-2 defeat to Yunchaokete Bu.
