MotoGP champion Jorge Martin has been diagnosed with six fractures following a crash after returning from an injury at the Qatar Grand Prix.
The Aprilia rider has been on the sidelines with multiple injuries since crashing early in the early days of preseason Tests held in Malaysia in February.
He suffered more fractures, including his left wrist, when he crashed while training before the Thai Grand Prix, and was forced to miss the first three Grand Prix.
After clearing his return to action in Qatar this weekend, Martin has solidly put together his first weekend at the factory Aprilia.
Qualifying 14th and under 10 and a half in Q2 place, Martin came in 16th after running in the top 10 fringe of the sprint.
The 22-lap grand prix on Sunday looked even more challenging for Martin, who was out of point when he crashed on a fast turn 12 right-handed crash on lap 14.
He needed to see a doctor from an ex-s on the side of the truck before being taken to the medical center for a check.
Aprilia confirmed that he did not injure his limbs, but was taken to the hospital for further examination.
A brief statement from the team read: “Jorge Martin suffered from a chest trauma. The rider is conscious of his limbs without any issues.
“Pneumonia: Cons of the rib bone on the right thoracic chest.
“He will be taken to the hospital and undergo a CT scan for further investigation.”
A new update from the Italian Mark says Martin will remain at the Doha hospital for several days for treatment with his collapsed lungs.
“Jorge Martin underwent a CT scan showing increased pneumothorax, which requires drainage to the wish,” the statement read. “Riders must remain under observation in the hospital for several days until pneumothorax is resolved.”
The team then confirmed that Martin had been diagnosed with six fractures in the rib. “The final exam also showed that six fractures in the right-post cost bone arch were present from 1 to 6.”
Aprilia endured the difficult Qatar Grand Prix on Sunday, with top rider Marco Betzech in 10th place, 14.3 seconds behind race winner Marc Marquez.
Massimo Ribola, CEO of Italian Marc, expressed his disappointment at Aprilia’s show in Qatar, saying it was “standing” with Martin.
“Our performance in the race didn’t meet expectations,” he said.
“We will continue to work with Marco to become more sharp in the opening phase of the race and in the time attacks. Still, the performance moves towards today’s backburner, and our thoughts are with Jorge during this difficult time. We will be with him.”
The next Grand Prix will take place in Jerez, Spain in two weeks. Jorge Martin would have been looking at it as a great opportunity to promote adaptation to the RS-GP, given Monday’s post-race testing after the event.
