Manchester United are currently considering the departure of Harry Maguire, according to transfer news expert Fabrizio Romano.
Once a key member of United’s backline, the 32-year-old has seen his role diminish in recent seasons, leading to speculation as to whether the club will offer him a new contract or allow him to leave.
With his current contract nearing its final stage, decisions made in the coming weeks could mark a turning point in Maguire’s United career.
Manchester United involved in negotiations with Harry Maguire
Romano said negotiations are underway between Maguire and the club over a new contract, which does not include a pay increase for the defender.
The Red Devils will change their contract structure, but the new deal means the England defender will extend his stay at Old Trafford.
Contributing to the GiveMeSport newsletter, Romano revealed:
“No (he won’t get a pay rise). Maguire’s pay structure would have to change to make that happen. Negotiations are taking place.”
Maguire supports staying at United over Saudi offer
The club may offer a short-term contract extension, but only under revised terms that reflect his reduced role.
For his part, Maguire may prefer clarity and playing time to lingering uncertainty. He needs to reflect on whether remaining at United, perhaps in a reduced role, is preferable to a fresh start elsewhere.
The experienced defender has been linked with a move to the Saudi Professional League, but Maguire is reportedly willing to reject big offers from the Middle East in order to have the best chance of playing top-level football and representing England at the World Cup next year.
