Russell Westbrook hasn’t signed a new contract yet this offseason, and with interest from other countries, he’s making a bold decision.
After a successful season with the Denver Nuggets, former MVP Russell Westbrook proved he can play a strong role in the NBA.
But, surprisingly, Westbrook left the Nuggets, declining his option and looking for a better contract elsewhere in the NBA.
The Sacramento Kings have strong interest in Westbrook, but have not been able to move the pieces to get a deal done.
Recently, we learned that Russell Westbrook received a $12 million offer from China to play basketball in their domestic league. But what does he think about this option?
Russell Westbrook reportedly has no intention of playing overseas this season, according to NBA insider Marc Stein.
Instead, he and his camp are pursuing an NBA contract and are open to the possibility that Westbrook won’t sign with an NBA team before the start of the season.
“League officials say there has been ‘no discussion’ so far of him considering interest in playing overseas this season.”
“Obviously if he’s open to international offers, it’s going to generate a ton of international offers, but I’m hearing Westbrook’s camp is focused on securing his next NBA opportunity.
“Even if that means, as seems increasingly likely, that option won’t become a reality until the 2025-26 regular season begins on October 21st.
“Westbrook, who turns 37 in November, will be entering his 18th NBA season. As we have reported since July, it is known that Sacramento has a strong interest in signing Westbrook…”
“(The Kings’) preference is to take the guard off (Devin Carter is considered the most available King) before adding a former MVP.”
The Sacramento Kings received a huge boost with this news, as they were at risk of losing Russell Westbrook to a foreign team.
Now they have no excuses and the Kings must find a way to move the pieces and add Westbrook to the roster.
The Kings have struggled with Keegan Murray’s recent injury and must find a way to shore up their squad for the start of the season.
Although Westbrook doesn’t play the same position, he gives the Kings the versatility to shuffle around in the backcourt in Keegan’s absence.
