Jonathan Cuminga and the Golden State Warriors have finally agreed to a new deal that will end the long deadlock in the summer.
Jonathan Cuminga has agreed to a two-year, $48.5 million contract to return to the Golden State Warriors.
Kuminga’s new deal includes team options that allow you to destroy and renegotiate contracts next summer.
The hope now is that the warriors will try to trade Kuminga when they are eligible to move in mid-January.
Although it was rumored that Cuminga would be traded by warriors in the summer, Golden State reportedly didn’t like the offers it received from the Sacramento Kings and the Phoenix Suns.
The deal will allow Kuminga to have more control over his immediate future and buy more time to potentially trade him with the Warriors.
In theory, Kuminga could start the season strongly, increase trade value and more teams could be interested in him. The Warriors were able to trade Kuminga before the trade deadline next year and receive a favorable haul in return.
However, author David Dennis Jr. believes that the market for Cuminga coming in January will still be limited.
“The problem with the Cuminga contract is that the style of play that maximizes Cuminga’s value (many ball handling and scoring) goes against what helps the Warriors win.
“So there’s likely still a small market for him to come in January.
“So it’s three months of miserable month with him. Dope.”
Kuminga’s path to trade seems linear, but things get complicated if he is unable to carve out a key role with the team again and the team does not show interest in him about the trade deadline.
This could lead to a situation in which Kuminga raided unlimited free agency in 2026, causing the warrior to walk him.
Cuminga didn’t play much in the Warriors’ first round series against the Houston Rockets.
However, Kuminga saw Stephen Curry get Curry with an injury in the Warriors’ second round playoff series against the Minnesota Timberwolves. Kuminga averaged 20.8 points with 54.3% shooting from the field.
It will be interesting to see the role Kuminga has to start a new season and whether he is given enough playing time to truly shine.
