Rushing, 24, is the second total prospect for the in the MLB pipeline behind Roki Sasaki and No. 1 hit prospects. He is scheduled to make his debut at some point this season, but is currently blocked by catchers Will Smith, Austin Burns and even Hunter Fedecia.
Last year, the began using it quickly in the outfield, hoping he would find a way into the big leagues there. However, this year they appear to be set on him as he continues to make progress as catchers.
Rushing told Snation this offseason that he would be open to all positions on the team, but wanted to be the catcher of the organization.
“Whatever the way I can help with this team, whatever I propose the quickest and most up-to-date thing, I’m going to take advantage of the opportunity,” Rushing said on Dougout Live. “And if catching is the real piece I’m hugging, then head down the road and we’ll cross that bridge.”
He also knew his job was to help Will Smith, the ‘ current catcher, do great things.
“From a catching perspective, my job is to step in and make Will’s job easier. Give him a little time,” Rushing said. “He’s going to become his player, keep making his name and keep pushing the Hall of Fame.”
Rush dealt with a concussion in 2023 after being hit by a backswing that affected him due to much of the season. Last year, with 115 games on Double-A and Triple-A, Rushing cut .271/.385/.512 with 26 home runs and 85 RBI.
